Uma Thurman has signed on to star in Caspian Pictures’ indie drama, “Girl Soldier.” Variety reports that she will play a nun who helped rescue 140 schoolgirls abducted in Uganda.

Diane Nabatoff, Allan Mindel, and Will Raee will produce with Raee directing.

Stephanie Pinola and Karen Croner penned the script based on Kathy Cook’s book “Stolen Angels,”  which is a recounting of the 1996 raid at a Ugandan boarding school, where armed rebels abducted young girls and forced them to become soldiers and sex slaves.

Sister Caroline, a nun at the school, tracked the rebels back to their base to rescue the girls and was successful in effecting the release of 110 of the children.

She was also successful in raising international concern about the troubles in her country, including that of the United Nations and the pope, and aided in the rescue of other children that had been consigned to a similar fate.

“Girl Soldier” is Pinola’s screenwriting debut, but Croner’s credits include “One True Thing,” “Dexterity,” “Daughter of the Queen of Sheba” and “Tulia.”
