“The Toxic Avenger,” the 1984 comedy/horror B-movie produced by Troma Entertainment has become the poster child for under the radar cult hits. Hollywood has decided to cash in on that fiercely loyal fan base.

Deadline reports that “Hot Tub Time Machine” director Steve Pink will take the reigns of a remake of the cult film which centered on a 98 lb. mop-slopping dork named Melvin who was mercilessly picked on by deranged muscleheads at the local gym. They toss him into a vat of toxic waste which transforms him into Toxie, a grotesque lumbering monster with super strength who fights pollution and exacts revenge on his bullies.

Pink along with Daniel C. Mitchell will write the script.  Charlie Corwin’s Original Media, which is a partnership with Dutch reality TV maker Endemol, is putting up funding for the “environmentally-conscious action-comedy.”

Kerry Foster along with the character’s original creators and Troma proprietors Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will produce.
