Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Named Top Box-Office Movie in August

For the first time in over 20 years, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back wins the weekend box office!

It has been over 20 years since the sequel to Star Wars: A New Hope, which was No. 1 in the box office. Movie theaters are slowly but surely beginning to open their doors across the U.S. after closing down at the beginning of 2020. But most of the big movie sets have not started opening their doors yet as a result of the current spikes of COVID 19 cases all across the country.

At the moment, there are less than 500 movie theaters that are currently open in the U.S. These include drive-ins. This makes the box office look a little different now. Right now, the totals for the weekends have not yet been tallied, but Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back has been predicted to have taken in $600K or more. This was more than enough for it to be No. 1 in August. Presently, it has a domestic tidal total for this well-known sequel of about $290.4 million.

It was later released in theaters again back in 1997, but this version now showcases changes that were made by George Lucas. A lot of Star Wars fans are angry about these changes, and they would have preferred it if Lucasfilm would release the original theatrical version to the public. With this being said, the 1997 edition of this movie has added another $6 million to the domestic total. This is something any studio would love to earn at this particular period in time.

Disney settled to take the second and third spots in the movie box office in August with the reissuing of Black Panther getting $110K, and Inside Out getting $160K respectively. Last year at this time, it was Spiderman Far From Home that was drinking in the profits.

Other Movies Fans are Expecting

It looks like Mulan will be released either this summer or this fall. Warner Bros. has moved Wonder Woman 1984 to the fall. Right now, no one is sure if it would remain there. But still, there are a lot of people who would love to go back to the movie theaters. This is observed by people going to Disney World for its grand reopening.

Right now, we all simply need to wait and see what would happen in these next few weeks, for us to be certain when all movie theaters may officially open up.

Star Wars fans, we’re sure you’re thrilled that your movie ranked No. 1. We wonder what reissued movie will rank well next time.
