For those of you that have May 8 circled, starred, or otherwise distinguished on your calenders, an abrupt change of plans may be in order.  As I was perusing my local theater’s listings, I noticed a strange discrepancy.  The promotional banners, posters, and webads list the new J.J. Abrams directed “Star Trek” as opening on Friday, May 8.  However, the actual screening lineup itself have the flick listed tonight, Thursday, May 7 at 7 pm.

So, I immediatley  headed over to the theater to check this out.  I approached the box office and requested two tickets for tonight at 7 pm.  The associate promptly handed over the tickets, no questions asked.

After doing a little research I discovered that the film is opening tonight, May 7 nationwide.  Now, why would the studio’s marketing department list incorrect info in the promotional materials?

Well, my theory is that it’s competing against a little film by the name of “X-men Origins: Wolverine,” that brought in almost $90 mil it’s opening weekend.  Adding an extra day to its weekend totals pads the stats a bit and gives “Star Trek” an inflated opening week.  It should also relieve some of the congestion that might arise from trekkies and trekkers with pointy ears scrambling to the theater all at once for what may be the best film of the franchise.

I know where I’ll be tonight.
