Arlo Guthrie’s iconic anti-war film, “Alice’s Restaurant,” will be screened at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 14 at The Orpheum, 200 N. Broadway. The event, a fundraiser for Tallgrass Film Festival, is presented by The Orpheum and OutSide A Dog promotion company. Tickets are $8 general admission and will be sold at the door the night of the screening.
A 1969 cinematic adaption of Guthrie’s talking blues, “Alice’s Restaurant,” follows our hero from the Thanksgiving dinner table to the dump to the courthouse to the brink of the Army. Directed by Arthur Penn and co-starring Patricia Quinn, James Broderick, Pete Seeger and Tina Chen, this Vietnam-era classic captures the spirit of the 60s and makes more than a few points about the brutal futility of war.
The fundraiser is co-sponsored by KEYN, The Wichita Blues Society, KIPCOR, The Peace and Social Justice Center, Naked City, InterFaith Ministries and The Orpheum Theatre.
By the way, since the screening is just one day before Arlo’s live show at The Orpheum, there’s a rumor that he might show up at this event. It’s just a rumor at this point, but keep your fingers crossed!
