After Sean Penn announced he was backing out of the Farrelly brothers’ modern take on “The Three Stooges,” (citing “personal reasons”) the online film community was sent into a tizzy of speculation about who would replace him.
Well, it turns out that Paul Giamatti may just be up to the task. The Boston Globe is reporting that Peter and Bobby Farrelly haven’t quite settled on the complete cast for “The Three Stooges,” but they’ve made one key acquisition.
In Boston this week to see Paul McCartney play Fenway, Peter Farrelly, told the Globe that Giamatti will replace Sean Penn as Larry.
Giamatti’s most high-profile roles have been Harvey Pekar in “American Splendor,” an Oscar nominated role as a boxing manager in “Cinderella Man,” and John Adams in the HBO mini-series, “John Adams.”
Benicio Del Toro is still attached to play Moe, but the Farrelly’s have yet to cast anyone to play Curly. It was once widely reported that Jim Carrey had signed on for the part, but he has since denied it.
