Edward Norton replaced Eric Bana and now indie favorite Mark Ruffalo will replace Norton as the iconic green monster, The Hulk, in the upcoming “The Avengers” film.

Deadline reports that Ruffalo’s agency, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, has just finalized a deal with Marvel for the prolific star to take on the high profile greenie in Marvel’s most hyped tent pole release to date.

The details surrounding Norton’s departure from the role are fuzzy.  Both sides made statements in favor of the actor returning for “The Avengers” but at some point during talks things went south. Marvel’s Kevin Feige released a scathing statement attacking Norton’s inability to work with others and Norton’s camp responded saying Feige’s claims were totally out of line and false and that the reason for Norton’s split was purely financial.

In any case, the result was a vacancy for one of the most well-known characters in all of comics.

Ruffalo, known more for his work in thought-provoking independent films like “The Brothers Bloom” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” rather than big summer blockbusters, will step in.

His most recently starred in Focus Features’ “The Kids Are All Right” which opened this month.
