Director Joe Wright is currently working on bringing a live-action film version of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale “The Little Mermaid” to the big screen.
THR reports that the script has already been written by Abi Morgan (“Brick Lane”) and will tell the familiar story of a young mermaid who gives up her life in the sea for the love of a human prince.
First published in 1837, Andersen’s story has been adapted for performance countless times. Wright’s version will not be a remake or re-imagining of the Disney classic, nor will it be a direct adaptation of Andersen’s story, but will be inspired by a children’s puppet theatre production at London’s Little Angel Theatre Company.
For the project Wright will be retemaing with Working Title, with whom he made “Pride & Prejudice,” “Atonement” and “The Soloist.”
