Sep 13, 2010 - Hollywood, California, USA - Actor EMMA STONE arriving to the 'Easy A' Los Angeles Premiere held at the Mann Chinese Theatre. © Red Carpet PicturesIt was a poorly kept secret that Emma Stone (“Zombieland”) was sitting at the top of the heap to play Peter Parker’s love interest, opposite Andrew Garfield, in Sony’s upcoming reboot of the “Spider-Man” franchise. As expected, it was announced officially by the studio earlier today via twitter:

“BREAKING NEWS: SPIDER-MAN GETS HIS GIRL: EMMA STONE TO PLAY FEMALE LEAD. Stone to Play Gwen Stacy Opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker”

What was a surprise however is that last sentence. It was hardly considered that Stone would play anyone other than Parker’s most famous squeeze, Mary Jane Watson. Instead, she’ll be playing the blonde bombshell, Gwen Stacy.

This unexpected announcement solidifies the studio’s intentions to take an entirely different route in retelling an American classic.
