Denis Leary is in talks to play the father of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in Columbia’s reboot of the “Spider-Man” franchise.

Gwen Stacy is a classic love interest in Spider-Man lore of the webslinging hero, best known in the comics for her untimely death at the hands of the Green Goblin.   Leary will play her father, police captain George Stacy, who encounters Spider-Man on a regular basis.

In the comics, Leary’s character also meets a premature death, like his daughter, only his demise comes accidentally during a fight between Spidey and Doctor Octopus.

Columbia and director Marc Webb are staying tight-lipped about the James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent-penned script so it’s anyone’s guess if the film will be faithful to the story lines in the original Marvel comics.

“Spider-Man” will be Leary’s first big screen theatrical project since 2002’s “The Secret Lives of Dentists.”
