Bryan Singer will direct and produce a feature-length film based on the ABC and Sci-Fi television series, “Battlestar Galactica,” for Universal Pictures.

The series first aired on ABC in 1978 and ran for two seasons.  It was then revived in 2004 where it ran for 73 episodes on the Sci-Fi channel.

Variety reports that the film will be “a complete reimagination” of the television show, thought It is not yet clear whether Ronald Moore, executive producer of the recent series, will be tapped to write the screenplay.

Singer, at one time, was attached to relauch the original series following his direction of the original “X-Men,” but it wasn’t to be.  Though it appears Singer will get his wish afterall, this time on the big screen.

Glen Larson will join Singer in producing duties.

This announcement essentially debunks the popular rumor that had Singer attached to direct “X-Men: First Class,” a new X-Men flick that focuses on a younger generation of mutants at the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning.

“Gossip Girl” creator, Josh Schwartz, has written the first draft of that script.
