Franklin D. Roosevelt, the president of the Great Depression, World War II and the New Deal, will be played by Bill Murray, actor of “Ghostbusters,” “Groundhog Day” and “Kingpin.”

The Vulture reports that Murray has officially signed on to star as FDR in an adaptation of the British radio play “Hyde Park On the Hudson” to be directed by Roger Michell of “Morning Glory.”

The film, which is set to start shooting in July, centers on the vaguely incestuous love affair FDR had with his distant cousin, Margaret Stuckley, and will be set in 1939 on weekend that the British monarchs visited Roosevelt at his upstate New York cottage.

Focus Features and the UK’s Film4 have agreed to jointly produce.

Richard Nelson penned the script, which he adapted from his own 2009 BBC radio play.

The role marks the latest in a recent string of serious roles for the one-time comedy superstar that has included Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation” and Jim Jarmusch’s “Broken Flowers.”
