Summit Entertainment confirmed recent rumors when it announced Wednesday that Bill Condon, writer and director of “Dreamgirls,” would be taking over directing duties for the the final entry in the “Twilight” series, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.”

Sticking to its pattern of success, Summit will bring back Melissa Rosenberg to adapt the Stephenie Meyer novel, and Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner to reprise their roles in a supernatural love triangle for “Breaking Dawn.”

There has been some speculation that the franchise’s final chapter could be split into two separate films to properly cover the full breadth of material introduced by the novel, but no decision has yet been reached.  And though it is likely that the project will either be filmed in 3D or up-converted in post-production, no official announcement has been made about the role, if any, 3D will play.

Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt and Meyer are set to produce.

“I’m very excited to get the chance to bring the climax of this saga to life onscreen,” said Condon. “As fans of the series know, this is a one-of-a-kind book — and we’re hoping to create an equally unique cinematic experience.”

The franchise, which chronicles the forbidden love between an ordinary teenager and her vampire suitor, has grossed over $1 billion worldwide so far.  The third entry, “Eclipse,” directed by David Slade, is slated for release June 30 this year.

“Bringing Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Breaking Dawn’ to the screen requires a graceful and intelligent hand, and we believe Bill Condon is exactly the right steward, having shown equal and abundant talents of immense creativity and subtle sensitivity,” said Summit production president Erik Feig.

Condon is noted for his acclaimed adaptation of “Chicago,” and for his Oscar-winning adapted screenplay for “Gods and Monsters,” which he also directed.
