In Hollywood’s latest endeavor to avoid originality at all costs, Universal has come out on top in a four-studio bidding war for the film rights to the classic 1979 Atari game, “Asteroids,” according to THR.
For all you Xbox360 natives, “Asteroids” entailed a single player navigating a triangular space ship through an asteroid field while destroying huge masses rock and enemy spacecraft.
Matthew Lopez will pen the script to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Senior production exec, Jeff Kirschenbaum, will oversee the project for Universal.
Di Bonaventura’s latest stamp will be on the Dennis Quaid starrer, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” which Paramount will release on Aug. 7.
Lopez’s previous credits include “Bedtime Stories,” “Race to Witch Mountain,” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” which is currently in production with Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel starring.
